Reading the conditions
The coloured tag on each field is its flight category — a standard FAA shorthand for how much you can see and how low the cloud is. It's the first thing any pilot checks.
- VFR — good visual conditions. Cloud above 3,000 ft and more than 5 miles visibility.
- MVFR — marginal. Cloud 1,000–3,000 ft or visibility 3–5 miles. Flyable, but lower than usual.
- IFR — below visual limits. Cloud 500–1,000 ft or visibility 1–3 miles.
- LIFR — well below. Cloud under 500 ft or visibility under a mile.
Conditions come from the automated weather station on each field, via aviationweather.gov, and are cached for up to twenty minutes. If the feed stops responding the page says so rather than showing you an old reading.
